CDI Boxes

dscdibox.jpg (49102 bytes)

What is a CDI box? The CDI box is the small black box on your ATV (located just under the left side of the fuel tank) which controls the timing as well as the limit (or lack there of) of RPMs that the engine can achieve. On all non-Baja models of the DS650 dating to 2002, the limit of RPMs is set from the factory at 7700.  The 2002 DS650 Baja as well as all DS650s made 2003 or later  are set to 7900. Several companies make higher performance CDI boxes which change the timing of the engine as well as raising or removing the upper RPM limit. To this point, there hasn’t been any evidence of any of these boxes performing better than the other, though they all perform better than the stock unit. The basic choices you will have when choosing an aftermarket CDI box is whether or not it has a RPM limit or not and price.

The options: (in alphabetical order)

Alba Racing (http://www.albaaction.com) $399.99

"This bolt in replacement CDI takes five minuets to install and will increase your rpm by 1500 on the top. This rev limiter eliminator enables you to wind the gears out longer and not have to shift as fast - keeping the power to your tires longer. You will feel like you are on a totally different bike once you have this easy to install performance product. It's a great way to go!"

Big Gun (http://www.biggunexhaust.com/) No estimated price

No information currently available. Currently this is a rumor.

Graydon Proline (http://www.graydonproline.com) $389.95

This box is said to have a similar change in power curve, and raises the RPM limit to approximately 9500 RPM.

MSD Ignitions CDI (http://www.tvipowerandsports.com/index.html) (Rumored vendor, contact them for more information.) (Estimated price of $450.00)

"When I spoke with Gary at TVI yesterday (11-20-02) they had told me that they were working on a new CDI with help from MSD Ignitions that should be out next month sometime. He told me that it will be interchangeable rev limiters so that you can change it out with any upgrades that you do later, it also has some kind of smart launch or something like that, and it has more power than the stock one."

Team Pami (http://team-pami.de/) $299.99

Also available at: http://www.tvipowerandsports.com/index.html ($299.00 non-verified)

This box is said to have a similar change in power curve, and completely removes the RPM limit. According to the many, many people who have the Pami or Rod Woods no-limit CDI the lack of a limit has never been a problem, however you may want to consider a kill switch ‘just in case.’

Ron Wood Racing (http://www.rotax.net) $298.00

Also available at www.ondunes.com $262.24 (lowest price CDI unit!)

This box has a similar change in power curve, and completely removes the RPM limit.

"Everyone has tried to copy the original RWR CDI, and now there are a lot of them out there. But the fact is, The Ron Wood Racing CDI is still the standard for CDI's on the DS. I would like it if everyone would publish thier power curve difference, but I still have yet to find anyone that does. I guess it just boils down to credibility and satisfied customers - and now price." –Mark a DS650 owner from Washington.
