Foy Tool Company's
Spring Thing

The DS650 has three very intimidating and strong springs holding the header pipes and the muffler section of the exhaust system together.  When I first looked at these springs with the idea of removing them so I could install my first slip on exhaust pipe I wasn’t very sure how I would do it.  I wanted something hooked so that I could easily pull them off and go from there.  Well, short of any real tool to do the job and not having a screw driver that I could sacrifice I used locking pliers to lock down on the springs and pull them off.  This worked – sort of.  I did get the springs off but at the cost of some skin off of my knuckles when the pliers lost grip of the spring I was pulling on (at a 90 degree angle no less!)  That was fine for the first time since I HAD to get the new slip on muffler installed.  So later on I bought a small screw driver and bent the tip of it into a hook.  (If you use a large screw driver with a thick shaft it wont fit inside of the hook on the spring.)  This worked much better than the pliers, but the shaft of the screw driver would bend when I was pulling on the springs and getting a solid grip wasn’t easy since my hands are large and the screw driver was small.

That was then – this is now.  The Spring Thing is a tool designed specifically to remove springs, and it does that as perfectly as one could expect.  The T shaped handle is large and rubber coated so even guys with XXL hands wont loose grip as with a tool that is too small, yet it is small enough even someone with smaller hands can use it.  It’s made of steel, and when you pick it up you can feel it won’t be bending any time soon – it is built to last.  When using it you’ll be able to pull the spring in the correct direction (not at a 90 degree angle as with pliers) which will make the spring move easier and you’ll have much better grip on the tool than with a bent screwdriver.  When I got my Spring Thing I didn’t have a need to pull the springs but I had to give it a shot since it was a NEW TOOL!  (Ladies, you probably would not understand.)  Well, I slipped the hook of the Spring Thing under the first spring and went to town.  It took me all of 30 seconds to pull them all off, no skinned knuckles, no trouble, and no scars on my springs from the teeth of the pliers, just three disconnected springs as they should be.  The springs went back on just as easy using this tool so I’d have to say the Spring Thing delivers as promised.

Pros:

T-Handle
Solid 3/8th inch steel (does NOT bend!)
Machined / Hardened hook (won’t break!)
Large Handle – big enough for guys with big hands
Non Slip rubber coating available in the Current DS650 colors! (Yellow, Red and Orange )
Available in different lengths for different jobs
Low cost!  Around $20 shipped to most people in the United States !  Similar tools from other companies cost as much as $70!
Made in USA !
Guaranteed not to break

Cons:

I didn’t find any yet – what is not to like about a tool that costs less than the competition and works better?  For around $20 you can’t afford to not have one in your toolbox.

These are some of the uses you may find for the Spring Thing:

Remove and Install Springs
Pull Cottar & Hitch Pins
Motorcycles
ATVs
Tractors
Mowers
Heavy Equipment
Trucks
Snowmobiles
Watercraft
Anything else that has a spring you need to remove!
